ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2012--
Build-A-Bear Workshop®, the interactive entertainment
retailer of customized stuffed animals, announced today that it will
raise funds for literacy programs in public schools through
DonorsChoose.org with the help of Guests this August. DonorsChoose.org
is an online organization that makes it easy for anyone to help better
the lives of children by providing funds to public school teachers for
classroom projects. Guests are invited to donate $1 (or more) to
DonorsChoose.org when they check out at Build-A-Bear Workshop stores or
at buildabear.com®
now through September 2.
“Teachers have always held a special place in my heart because of the
many great teachers I had as a child that helped me become who I am
today,” said Maxine Clark, Build-A-Bear Workshop founder and chief
executive bear. “We are excited to provide our Guests with this
opportunity to support DonorsChoose.org and continue helping teachers
with the resources they need to shape today’s students into tomorrow’s
leaders.”
The funding will support literacy projects in public schools for
teachers who are first time users with DonorsChoose.org. Build-A-Bear
Workshop first partnered with DonorsChoose.org in 2009 and the company
and its foundation have since raised over $100,000 to fund classroom
projects throughout the United States.
“We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Build-A-Bear Workshop
and thank them for empowering young people to give back and make a
difference in classrooms across America,” said Charles Best, founder of
DonorsChoose.org.
Since its inception in 1997, Build-A-Bear Workshop has given Guests a
voice in supporting the causes that are important to them, such as
children’s health and wellness, animals, literacy, and has given more
than $30 million through its corporate donations and foundation grant
programs to these causes.

About DonorsChoose.org
Founded in 2000 by a social studies teacher in the Bronx,
DonorsChoose.org is a nonprofit website where public school teachers
describe specific educational projects for their students, and donors
can choose the projects they want to support. After completing a
project, the donor hears back from the classroom they supported in the
form of photographs and student thank-you letters. Requests range from
pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to
microscope slides for a biology class. In the past ten years of
operation, residents of 50 states and 10 countries have funded 287,136
student projects, channeling more than $119 million in resources to over
6.8 million students.
